Media Skills

The church lives and moves in a world heavily influenced by technology, mass communication and the media. If we are well equipped to use these tools, we have a powerful ally in reaching those around us, with the Gospel, with good news to share. Too often the church presents itself in a stale, unexciting way. Here are two pages of resources :

The first offers some guidance on developing a media strategy or communications plan to support your activities. Whether it be a project, a mission, or everyday ministry and evangelism, deciding how you will use the resources of the media to communicate is critical.  Whilst you might assume that this will communicate with those outside the church, it is a sober reflection that opinions of church members about their broader church is likely to be more influenced by secular media than by Christian media, simply because they are likely to see so much more of it.

The second page of resources offers some practical tips to answer the following questions :

How do I get in touch with the media?
How do I write a press release?
How do I run a news conference?
How do I use a radio interview?
How do I use the local paper?
How do I use direct mail?
How do use the internet?

Pause for Thought : Review your communication with your leadership group. How much is internal to church members, how much is external?  How much would you describe as good communication, how much are you less happy with?  What isn't said? How much is "word" and how much is "picture" or "sound"? Is it attractive? What do other people think of it?
