This review checklist gives twelve
questions which allow leaders to review the degree to which their church and the
leadership possess the characteristics of an organisation which can share responsibility
for its growth. Completing this will require a high degree of honesty. It's even better if
you are willing for two or three other people within the church to complete it as well,
and to talk about the scores you each gave. We suggest writing down answers to the
questions - as this forces you to be clear in your thinking!! |
Leading From Within
What appeals to
you about the "leading from within" model? What don't you like about it?
In what situations do you think leading from in front may be more appropriate?
Can you think of examples in your church where the distributed leadership (rowing
boat) model applies?
Building Trust
Where can you see
high levels of trust in your church?
Are there places where you can see low levels of trust? Is there anything that you
can do here to help this?
What two or three things could you do differently to encourage even higher levels
of trust. Think through Competence, Openness, Reliability, Equity and Caring, both on a
personal and a corporate level.
Future Focus
Does your church
have a vision? Is this a shared vision, or a personal vision shared?
Look back at some minutes of your leadership/church council meetings. What
percentage of time is devoted to the future, and moving into it?
Personal Growth
What personal
development have you experienced over the last twelve months? What opportunities are
coming up that you could take advantage of?
What processes (formal and informal) does the church have for recognising and
developing gifts throughout the community of faith? How well is it working?
Learning Together
Take a look at
your church budget. How much does the church spend on training and education?
(time as well as money)
To what degree is this spread amongst the church or is the training concentrated on
a select few?
When you have completed the questions, pause
for reflection. Take a moment to consider what you feel has come out of this reflection
which is positive. Thank God for this!
You may also feel that there are a number of things which you would like to be different
with your leadership and in church. Don't worry! This is not necessarily any criticism,
admission of failure or of weakness. What this may do is provoke some thoughts that lead
to a personal vision for your own leadership. If so, take some time to write down what you
want that future to be like. Pray about this, and then try to develop an action plan of
the learning that you will need to acquire, the opportunities to try this out in various
areas, and how your leadership style might grow.
Given Jesus as a role model, it is not surprising if we never reach our desired standard!
But let us give thanks for the positive things, and pray for strength to work on the
opportunities.
This is the end of the Moving Ahead
Together module. Please would you take a moment to give us some feedback
on it. Thank You.
